YoHealth Malta Premier – Closing round Matchday 1
Hamrun Spartans…..2
Tarxien Rainbows….1
Ħamrun Spartans maintained their strong momentum in the YoHealth Malta Premier closing round with a 2–1 victory over Tarxien Rainbows, a result that keeps them firmly in the title conversation. The win also leaves Tarxien in serious trouble, anchored to the bottom of the table and increasingly under pressure in the relegation battle.
The Spartans were eager to respond to earlier results on the same matchday, after Valletta’s crushing win over Mosta and Floriana’s success against Naxxar, and they did so with a composed and professional performance.
Ħamrun enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and went close through Garcia, Attard and Bjelicic, while Tarxien threatened sporadically on the counter. The breakthrough arrived on 44 minutes when Matthew Guillaumier struck from the edge of the area, his powerful central effort beating Cassar to give the Spartans a deserved lead at the break.
The second half saw Tarxien attempt to raise the tempo, but Ħamrun continued to look the more dangerous side. Coach Modica’s substitutions proved decisive, with Jonny making an immediate impact just a minute after coming on, doubling the Spartans’ advantage on 62 minutes with a calm finish netting his second goal after his return from injury.
Tarxien refused to give up and reduced the deficit through Anthony Lokosa, who produced a fine solo effort to beat the defence and score from inside the box. The Rainbows pushed hard in search of an equaliser and came agonisingly close on several occasions, including a goal-line clearance by Compri and a missed header from Lokosa.
Despite the late pressure, Ħamrun remained organised and disciplined, seeing out the closing stages to secure all three points and make an important statement in the closing round.
The result reinforces Ħamrun Spartans’ title ambitions, keeping them in step with their main rivals after victories for Valletta and Floriana, while Tarxien Rainbows remain rooted to the foot of the standings, with their situation becoming increasingly precarious.
