YoHealth Malta Premier 2025/26
Opening Round – MD5
Ħamrun Spartans…0
Gżira U……………..0
Ħamrun Spartans passed up the chance to move clear at the top of the YoHealth Malta Premier League after a goalless draw with Gżira United at the National Stadium. The champions controlled long spells of possession yet lacked precision in the final third, while Gżira delivered a disciplined display to claim a share of the points. Gżira remain without a victory this season and Ħamrun did not find the net.
Early pressure from Ħamrun almost told inside two minutes when Ante Čorić slipped N’Dri Koffi through, only for goalkeeper Colombo to produce a sharp save. Gżira were content to sit compact and look for quick breaks through Maxuell Maia and Andre, and they nearly struck when Felix Bonilha released Maia, who turned past Henry Bonello but could only find the side netting from a tight angle.
Ħamrun continued to probe. Koffi burst clear on the left and cut the ball back for Čorić, whose effort deflected behind, before the Ivorian forward drew another strong stop from Colombo midway through the half. The Spartans were then forced into an early change when Vincenzo Polito took a blow to the head and, despite his reluctance to come off, made way for Sven Xerri before the interval.
Gżira showed greater attacking intent after the restart. Maia found space on fifty-seven minutes but fired over. Ħamrun carved out their clearest opening just past the hour when Rafael Compri combined with substitute Éder, whose low cross reached Koffi, only for the striker to steer wide from close range.
Referee: Fyodor Zammit.
The expected late surge from the champions never truly materialised. Gżira held their shape, protected their penalty area with conviction, and saw out the closing stages to secure a deserved point.
