Garcia at the double as Ħamrun overpower Floriana

In what was the most anticipated match of Matchday 10 in the YoHealth Malta Premier League, reigning champions Ħamrun Spartans defeated title contenders Floriana 3-1. With this victory, the Spartans extended their unbeaten record against the Greens, Floriana’s last win over Ħamrun dates back to 3rd February 2018.

Ħamrun took the lead after just nine minutes. A cross by Matias Garcia was mishit by N’Dri Koffi, but the ball was headed back into danger by Joseph Mbong. Mbong found Eder Bruno, who laid the ball off to Koffi, and the Ivorian striker made no mistake from close range to slot home the opener.

Former Floriana player Matias Garcia doubled Ħamrun’s lead midway through the first half. After receiving a pass from Smajlagić, Garcia fired a precise shot from outside the box that nestled into the corner of the net, giving the Spartans a comfortable 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Just two minutes into the second half, Ħamrun struck again. Floriana goalkeeper Cioletti played the ball short to M’Mombwa, who lost possession to Garcia and the ex-Floriana midfielder wasted no time, driving a low shot past Cioletti to make it 3-0 and complete his personal brace.

However, four minutes later, the Spartans were reduced to ten men when Eder Bruno was caught headbutting Zachary Scerri. Referee Fyodor Zammit showed him a straight red card, leaving Floriana with a man advantage for the remainder of the match.

From then on, Floriana pushed forward in search of a goal and finally pulled one back in the 82nd minute. A free-kick by Jake Grech was met by Mendonça, whose first-time effort was partially blocked by Bonello. The rebound fell to Mustapha Jah, who slotted home to make it 3-1.

Despite their late pressure, it was too little, too late for the Greens. The match ended 3-1 in favour of Ħamrun Spartans, who continue their impressive run and maintain their dominance over Floriana.
