Naxxar Lions’ Brazilian forward, Edson Farias, has been crowned the LifeStar Most Valuable Player for February following impressive performances in the Maltese Premier League.
Farias played a key role in Naxxar’s fight for survival, leading his side to two crucial victories last month—a 2-1 win over Birkirkara and a commanding 5-2 triumph against Melita. His brilliance was further recognised when he was named MVP in Naxxar’s hard-fought derby defeat to Mosta.
Farias’s contributions have been vital with the Lions battling to avoid bottom place. His technical ability, vision, and leadership on the pitch have offered his side a much-needed boost in a challenging campaign.
The 28-year-old claimed the MVP title with six votes out of 26 cast. He edged past four other nominees: the Marsaxlokk duo Yuri Messias and Alex Tank, Melita’s Yepez Morlets, and Birkirkara’s Alex Satariano, who each received two votes.
Farias received his award on Sunday before Naxxar’s league clash against Hibernians at the Tony Bezzina Stadium. The trophy was presented in recognition of the Brazilian’s outstanding contributions.
Born on 8th January 1997, Farias has built an impressive career in Maltese football. Since he arrived at Naxxar Lions in 2018, he has remained a pivotal figure for the club.
He made his mark in the first division, debuting on 20th January 2019 against Lija Athletic, before playing a decisive role in Naxxar’s promotion to the Maltese Premier League as league runners-up in 2023.
Since his top-flight debut on 15th September 2023 against Marsaxlokk, the Brazilian has amassed 44 league appearances, scoring nine goals in the MPL. Across all competitions, he has played 133 matches for Naxxar, netting 49 goals.
Signed from Brazilian outfit SG Guarai, Farias previously played for Guarani SC before making his move to Europe. Now in his seventh consecutive season with Naxxar, he remains one of the club’s most influential players.
With the season entering a crucial phase, Naxxar Lions will be looking to Farias to inspire them in their bid to avoid relegation. If his recent performances are anything to go by, the Brazilian’s influence could prove decisive in their battle for survival.
