The 2024–25 360 Sports Malta Premier League will reach its dramatic conclusion on Saturday evening as Birkirkara and Ħamrun Spartans face off in the eagerly awaited Finalissima at the National Stadium (kick-off: 18:00). A capacity crowd of over 10,000 supporters is expected, with both fanbases having sold out their Enclosure and Millennium Stand allocations.
The winner will be crowned national champions and secure Malta’s sole berth in next season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers, while the runner-up will qualify for the UEFA Conference League.
The match is set to be a fitting climax to an enthralling season, with both sides entering the final off the back of tense semi-final victories earlier this week. Ħamrun edged past Floriana on penalties, while Birkirkara narrowly overcame Sliema Wanderers to book their place in the league’s deciding fixture.
For Ħamrun Spartans, victory on Saturday would deliver an 11th league title and their third in succession a remarkable feat given the club’s inconsistent start to the campaign, which saw the dismissal of coach Alessandro Zinnari. Since his appointment in February, Winston Muscat has revitalised the side, guiding them through the Top Six phase with improved consistency and tactical clarity.

Speaking ahead of the final, Muscat described the match as a “do-or-die” occasion. “There will be one team going home with the trophy, and it will be the team that commits the fewest mistakes,” he said. “Despite the difficulties we’ve faced this season, particularly earlier on, the players have shown great character and unity. Their spirit fills me with confidence that we can finish the job.”
Muscat also praised Birkirkara for their transformation this season, describing them as a “very physical side” with dangerous options at set-pieces and match-winners capable of turning the game in an instant.
On the other side of the touchline, Birkirkara are seeking their fifth domestic league title and first since 2013. Head coach Stefano De Angelis took charge last summer and has overseen a rebuild that has taken the Stripes from mid-table obscurity to the brink of silverware and an FA Trophy semi-final.

“This season we started almost from scratch,” De Angelis said. “To now be in the league final against the strongest team in Maltese football underlines just how far we’ve come. Our success has been built on intensity and resilience – we’ll need both in abundance if we’re to lift the trophy.”
The Birkirkara boss highlighted the importance of capitalising on set-pieces, an area where his side has been particularly effective this season.
Among the key figures expected to play pivotal roles is Birkirkara striker Alexander Satariano, whose performances this term have been central to his team’s success. “This is the biggest game of my career,” he said. “There’s pressure, of course, but we have to embrace it. The energy from our supporters pushes us to give everything.”
Ħamrun captain Steve Borg echoed those sentiments. “These are the games you dream of playing in,” he said. “Our fans have been behind us throughout the season, through the good times and the difficult ones. We want to give them a night to remember.”
With both sides boasting quality, experience and motivation, Saturday’s Finalissima promises to be a gripping encounter. The stakes could not be higher, and only one team will lift the Premier League trophy come full-time.
