Balzan ended their run of consecutive defeats to Birkirkara in both the league and the Meridianbet FA Trophy with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mosta in the 360Sports Malta Premier League Closing Round at the National Stadium on Friday. This marked Balzan’s first win of the Closing Round and handed Mosta their first loss in this stage.
Mosta took an early lead in the 14th minute through Giancarlo Goncalves, who fired a first-time shot from outside the area after a Balzan clearance. Balzan equalized in the 26th minute when Luka Lukovic headed a Victor Blasco cross to Udoyen Akpan, who calmly slotted past goalkeeper Udoh Akpan.
Early in the second half, Balzan went ahead as a Jan Busuttil freekick was inadvertently deflected into the net by Mosta’s Clayton Failla for an own goal. Mosta leveled the score in the 77th minute when substitute Zachary Brincat headed home a Failla cross.
Balzan secured the win just four minutes from time as Udoyen Akpan struck his second goal, converting another Victor Blasco cross to seal the 3-2 victory.
