Modica calls for focus as Ħamrun aim for group stage breakthrough

On thursday evening, in the eve of the most important game in the history of Maltese football between RFS and Maltese champions Ħamrun Spartans, the sqaud trained for the last time at the LNK Sporta Parks Stadium followed by the Matchday-1 press conference where Malta Sport was present.

Coach Giacomo Modica acknowledged the pressure surrounding the match but stressed the need to manage it.

“The important thing is that it doesn’t become an obsession, because if it becomes an obsession, it becomes a problem.”

He highlighted the significance of the game for Ħamrun, the fans, and Malta’s sporting image, without letting the weight of responsibility become overwhelming.

Notably, he put things into perspective by referencing those suffering in war, reminding everyone of what truly matters in life.

“Let’s think of those who are at war, who are losing children, husbands, wives, everything most precious in life.”

Despite the challenges, Modica affirmed their determination.

“We haven’t come here to mess around. We want to do well, be competitive, make a good impression and, if possible, send a very important signal to everyone”

He concluded by underlining the opportunity that reaching the group stage would represent for Malta, and called for focus and composure ahead of the match.

Ħamrun striker Saliou Thioune, the goal scorer in the home match win last Thursday said that this club and the people around it truly deserves to reach this important objective.

Ħamrun take on RFS tomorrow at 7pm (Malta time) at the LNK Sporta Parks Stadium.

A win or even a draw would be enough for Ħamrun to make history and become the first-ever Maltese club to reach the group stages of a European competition, in this case, the UEFA Conference League.
