UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against four Real Madrid players, including star forwards Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr, following the club’s dramatic Champions League last-16 victory over city rivals Atlético Madrid earlier this month.
The inquiry centres on allegations of provocative behaviour towards Atlético supporters after Real Madrid’s penalty shootout triumph at the Metropolitano Stadium on 12 March. Defender Antonio Rüdiger and midfielder Dani Ceballos have also been named in the proceedings.
It is alleged that the players celebrated in front of the home crowd in a manner considered inflammatory by Atlético, who lodged a formal complaint. Footage from the match appeared to show several Real players dancing and making gestures towards sections of Atlético fans, leading to objects being thrown onto the pitch from the stands.
UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has confirmed that it is reviewing the case, although it has yet to detail the potential charges or sanctions. The situation comes at a crucial time, with Real Madrid preparing to face Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals, starting with the first leg on 9 April.
The case is expected to focus on potential breaches of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations relating to unsporting or provocative behaviour and violations of basic conduct principles.
UEFA, shortly after the match, took note of the underlying concerns about unsporting behaviour during post-match celebrations. The atmosphere at the Metropolitano grew tense as home supporters reacted angrily to the celebrations, escalating the already intense rivalry between the two clubs.
Real Madrid have yet to comment on the matter publicly, while UEFA has indicated that further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
With Madrid still competing for both domestic and European honours, any disciplinary actions could have significant implications in the weeks ahead.
