Harry Kane thrives in deeper Bayern role ahead of Champions League return to Arsenal

Harry Kane heads back to north London on Wednesday in perhaps the finest form of his career, reinvented as a more complete all-round force for Bayern Munich ahead of their Champions League showdown with Arsenal.

The England captain, long known as one of Europe’s most reliable goalscorers, has added new layers to his game in Germany. Under Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, Kane has frequently operated in a deeper, more creative position, dropping behind Nicolas Jackson or Serge Gnabry and contributing heavily in build-up play as well as defensive work. With Jamal Musiala sidelined since the Club World Cup, Kane has shouldered additional creative responsibility and is thriving.

“This is the most I’ve enjoyed my football,” Kane said after Bayern’s 6-2 comeback win over Freiburg. “I’m involved more. I love the way we play, aggressive, no fear. I know I’m not just a goal-scorer. I can impact the team by passing, one-on-one situations, and taking pressure off the team. I love tackling and helping the team, too.”

Bayern have opened the season in extraordinary form: 17 wins and one draw from 18 matches in all competitions, with Kane featuring in every game. His numbers remain exceptional, 24 goals in 18 appearances for Bayern, alongside five goals from five matches for England, but the statistics only partially capture his influence.

Kane’s tactical shift has helped unlock Bayern’s attack, and his leadership has become even more important with Luis Díaz suspended for three Champions League matches following his red card against Paris Saint-Germain. With Díaz unavailable, Bayern will lean more heavily on Kane both as a scorer and creator.

A trip to Arsenal inevitably evokes memories for Kane, who came through Tottenham’s academy after being released by Arsenal as a young boy. Despite the narrative, he insists the past won’t fuel him.

“That was 20 years ago,” he said. “We’ve moved on a long way since then.”

Kane’s record against Arsenal speaks for itself—15 goals in 21 matches—and he scored a crucial penalty in Bayern’s quarter-final victory over the Gunners in the 2023–24 Champions League campaign.

“It’s very familiar territory for me,” he admitted. “Having played for Tottenham for so long, it adds a bit more to the game.”

Arsenal’s defensive dominance meets Bayern’s set-piece weakness

Mikel Arteta’s side arrive with the best defensive record in Europe’s top leagues:

  • Zero goals conceded in the Champions League
  • Only six goals conceded in the Premier League

Their discipline and organisation will be a major test for Bayern, who have shown vulnerability at the back in recent weeks. All four goals conceded in their last two matches have come from set-pieces, an area in which Arsenal excel, with 10 of their 24 league goals coming from dead-ball situations.

Kompany did not hide his concern:
“You can’t hide it, everyone saw it. Arsenal’s analysts will see it too. We have to defend those situations with personality and character.”

Bayern may be flying, but Arsenal’s defensive solidity and set-piece sharpness pose a serious challenge. Kane, operating between the lines and contributing far beyond the penalty area, may once again be the difference-maker.

Back in London, facing old rivals and familiar supporters, the stage is perfectly set for a defining night in the England captain’s evolving Bayern adventure.
