Toma Basic scores the winner to sink Juventus and fire Lazio to second home win of the season

Juventus slipped to a third straight defeat in all competitions, as Toma Bašić capitalised on a mistake from Jonathan David to secure a Lazio victory, in a match overshadowed by controversial refereeing decisions that angered both teams.

The Bianconeri came into the game without a win in seven matches, following consecutive losses to Como and Real Madrid. Kenan Yıldız was nursing a knee issue and was rested, while Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal, Arkadiusz Milik and Carlo Pinsoglio were all unavailable through injury. This led to a new attacking partnership of Jonathan David and Dušan Vlahović, with Mattia Perin starting in goal.

Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri was also dealing with a lengthy injury list, missing Nuno Tavares, Matteo Cancellieri, Taty Castellanos, Nicolò Rovella, Samuel Gigot and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Despite this, Gustav Isaksen made his first start of the season after recovering from glandular fever.

Isaksen squirmed between three to pull back at the by-line, forcing Federico Gatti into a panicked clearance from five yards, and the deadlock was broken soon after.

David got his back-pass header completely wrong, giving it straight to Danilo Cataldi, and Toma Basic saw his strike from outside the area deflected off Gatti to totally wrong-foot Perin.

Andrea Cambiaso’s cushioned volley from a Francisco Conceicao cross hit the side-netting at the back post, but Juve almost paid for another howler.

It was Manuel Locatelli this time who laid it off for Matteo Guendouzi on the edge of the box, forcing a Gatti block in front of goal, then Lloyd Kelly charging down the Isaksen follow-up.

David almost made up for his earlier error when running onto an inspired Teun Koopmeiners pass, but Ivan Provedel rushed off his line to parry the dinked finish.

Francisco Conceição fired over the bar from a promising position and later delivered a cross that Vlahović mishit from just outside the penalty area.

Kenan Yıldız came on for Cambiaso at the start of the second half, signalling a much more attacking approach from Juventus. Vlahović then struck the crossbar from 12 yards after being set up by Kelly, but the striker’s frustration was eased as the offside flag had already gone up.

Manuel Locatelli tested Provedel with a low drive that was gathered comfortably, and moments later Weston McKennie was perhaps fortunate to avoid a second yellow card—referee Andrea Colombo did not even award a foul after the American barged into Guendouzi.

There was even more controversy on the hour mark when Mario Gila appeared to tread on Conceicao’s foot, but the referee waved play on and VAR did not intervene for a penalty either.

Boulaye Dia tested Perin at the base of the near post after squirming between two, while Vlahovic nodded McKennie’s cross wide and Kenan Yildiz at full stretch couldn’t get control of the Pierre Kalulu ball over the top.

Provedel flew to palm away the Khephren Thuram header on a corner, but Isaksen sprinted from midfield, cut inside and bent a left-foot finish just past the far post.

Pedro blasted wide with his first touch on a Zaccagni pull-back and in stoppages Gila threw himself in the path of a Locatelli scorcher from the edge of the box.
