Substitute Gineitis saves point for Torino against Lazio

A late goal from super-sub Gvidas Gineitis helped Torino come from behind to draw 1-1 with Lazio, who have now gone four games without a win, their worst run since March 2024.

The match started off scrappy, with neither team able to take control. Lazio, still reeling from a 5-0 thrashing by Bologna in their last game – their worst defeat in ten years – began to settle after a while. Mattia Zaccagni came close to scoring, forcing a great save from Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić with a powerful first-time shot after a rebound.

Milinković-Savić almost made a big mistake soon after, coming off his line to clear a long ball but losing focus and handing the ball to Pedro. Luckily for Torino, he recovered in time to block the shot, and then Gustav Isaksen fired into the side netting. Torino’s best first-half chance came when Cesare Casadei stole the ball from Alessio Romagnoli and crossed to Ché Adams, but Adams’ weak shot was easily cleared.

That was the last real chance of a messy first half. Torino started the second half stronger, with Guillermo Maripán forcing a good save with a powerful header. But just after the hour, Lazio took the lead. Pedro passed to Adam Marušić, who ran onto a well-placed ball and curled a lovely shot into the far corner from just outside the box.

Lazio nearly doubled their lead when Zaccagni made a tricky run into the box, only to be denied by Milinković-Savić’s outstretched leg. Then Mattéo Guendouzi went close with a low shot that just missed the target. It seemed like Lazio might finally keep a clean sheet after six games without one, but their hopes were dashed when Gineitis – one of several attacking changes made by Torino boss Paolo Vanoli – smashed in a first-time finish after a deflected cross fell to him.

Lazio almost scored again right away, with Tijjani Noslin’s overhead kick being saved, but the match ended 1-1. That’s Lazio’s third 1-1 draw in their last four games, while Torino have now scored in eight away matches in a row – the longest current run in Serie A.
