Luciano Spalletti wasted no time in making his ambitions clear as he was presented as Juventus’ new head coach, just 24 hours after the club confirmed his appointment. The 66-year-old will take charge of his first match on Saturday against Cremonese, and while the deal runs only until the end of the season, Spalletti made it clear that neither the contract length nor recent turbulence at the club will affect his belief in what Juventus can achieve.
“If I didn’t believe this team had potential, why would I have accepted an eight-month contract?” Spalletti said. “The type of contract is not a problem. I believe we can get this club back to the level it belongs.”
Spalletti arrived after Igor Tudor’s departure, and he was quick to acknowledge the work of his predecessor, praising the team structure and mentality he inherited. He expressed respect for the current squad and suggested that Juventus possess the quality to aim high once again.
“I hope we can re-enter the Scudetto race,” he said. “We cannot settle for less. There are still many matches to play. I have seen everything in football over 30 years, and I am not here to watch things take their course. We will try to put our hands on the situation and improve it.”
A key theme throughout the press conference was clarity and simplicity. Spalletti emphasised the importance of unity of thought and tactical cohesion on the pitch. “We must be a team,” he insisted. “If we are stretched, disconnected, or thinking differently, the game becomes difficult. Being compact and sharing the same idea of football is essential.”
On Dusan Vlahovic, who recently suggested that players must accept responsibility for the club’s instability, Spalletti’s tone was collaborative rather than confrontational: “I haven’t had any imposition from the club regarding Vlahovic or any player. I’ll look at his attitude, his intentions. Judging from his last match, the intentions are good. The attitude is what sets everything right.”
The new coach also addressed the possibility of altering Juventus’ tactical structure. While he hinted that continuity could be important in the early days, he also opened the door to changes, including a switch from a three-man defence to a back four. “Today I will run my first training session. I respect the work done so far, and it may continue. But some players may be better suited in different roles. We could move to a four-man defence.”
Spalletti, who won a historic Scudetto with Napoli in 2023, spoke with warmth and affection when asked about his time in the city and the emotional bond he formed there. “Napoli will always remain in my heart,” he said. “After that season, I didn’t want to wear another tracksuit out of respect for what we achieved. Some people try to use this against me, but the bond remains untouched.”
As for the scale of the challenge ahead, Spalletti insisted his focus is straightforward: good football, hard work and clarity of purpose. “We must leave the slogans aside and let the sound of the ball sliding on the grass do the talking,” he said. “Winning is fundamental, but football is also a spectacle. We will try to produce something beautiful.”
The message was unmistakable: Juventus may have been through transition, but the new manager has arrived with conviction, not hesitation. Spalletti understands both the weight of the shirt and the expectations surrounding it, and he appears ready to embrace both.
