Reigning Serie A champions Napoli continue their push to retain the title on Saturday night when they host a confident Como side at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. A victory would see Napoli end the evening with a three-point lead at the top of the table, underlining their strong start to the campaign and reaffirming their credentials in the title race.
Napoli recorded their seventh win in nine league matches with a 1-0 success away to Lecce on Tuesday, a result that also delivered their first clean sheet across ten competitive fixtures. Returning to their home ground, the champions will be aiming to extend an impressive unbeaten run of 17 matches in all competitions in front of their own supporters. They have won five out of five at home so far this season, including a statement 3-1 victory over fellow contenders Inter Milan.
Saturday’s match also gives Napoli a chance to record a sixth consecutive home league victory, something they last achieved in February 2023 during the peak of their Scudetto charge. Their consistency at the Maradona remains one of the strongest elements of their push to stay top.
Como, however, arrive with belief and organisation. Cesc Fabregas’ side hold the second-best defensive record in Serie A, conceding only six goals across their opening nine matches. Their 3-1 win over Verona in midweek means they come into the weekend unbeaten since early September. Como’s form on the road has also been steady, with only one defeat in their last eight away fixtures across all competitions, although a 2-1 victory at Fiorentina remains their sole away league win of the season to date.
Historically, this fixture has produced surprises. Como have won four of the last five meetings between the sides, although both matches last season were won by the home team on the day, suggesting that the venue could prove decisive once again.
David Neres has become an increasingly influential figure for Napoli, assisting in three consecutive matches and scoring in this corresponding fixture last term. For Como, Nico Paz continues to impress with a direct involvement in eight league goals this season. However, only two of those contributions have come away from home, highlighting the difference in output on opposition turf.
Napoli suffered a setback when Noa Lang was forced off with injury in midweek, adding to a list of absentees which already includes Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Alex Meret and Andrea Dossena. Como, in contrast, approach the match close to full strength.
With Napoli scoring freely at home and Como defending with discipline but occasionally slow to start away from home, the match is expected to be tightly contested. However, given Napoli’s form and home advantage, the champions will feel confident of extending their lead at the top of Serie A.
