Atalanta beat Roma to close gap at top of Serie A

Atalanta closed the gap to the top of Serie A to just one point after a hard-fought 2-0 win over AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, extending their unbeaten run to five games against the capital club.

Atalanta aimed to put pressure on Napoli, while Roma were trying to recover after losing four of their last five league games. Roma almost took the lead early when Leandro Paredes’ shot from outside the box forced Atalanta’s goalkeeper, Marco Carnesecchi, into a save. However, the game settled into a more cautious pattern, with few chances for either team.

Manu Kone nearly scored for Roma with a shot that went just wide, but the best defensive work in the first half came from Roma, as they kept Atalanta’s attack at bay. Neither team created much danger before the break, setting up a tense second half.

The second half started without any major chances, until Sead Kolsinac shot wide in the 70th minute. This sparked Atalanta into action, and Marten de Roon broke the deadlock with a shot from outside the box that took a deflection, wrong-footing Roma’s goalkeeper Mile Svilar.

Roma struggled to recover and fell further behind when former player Juan Cuadrado set up Nicolo Zaniolo for a header into the net.

Atalanta are now 13 games unbeaten in all competitions and continue their push for the Scudetto. Roma, meanwhile, remain in 15th place, having lost four games in a row and are dangerously close to the relegation zone.
