Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his 50th goal in the national team jersey against Norway, and at this rate, he can make history that he never dreamed of!
For a long time, we were waiting for someone who would remove Stjepan Bobek from the first place in the list of scorers of the Serbian football team. The legendary Bobek then scored 38 goals for the SFR Yugoslavia national team. Many were close: Galic, Mijatovic, Milosevic, but still Mitro-gol managed to break that decades-long record.
However, after a new goalscoring rhapsody in a jersey with the national emblem, Mitrović can become one of the best national team scorers when we talk about European selections.
UEFA has published a list of national team players who have scored huge goals for their countries. Of course, in first place is the untouchable Cristiano Ronaldo, who is also the best scorer in the world with 117 goals (so far) for his national team.
Behind him is Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás, who scored 84 goals for the “light cavalry” in believe it or not only 83 matches!!
In third place is another active player who, undoubtedly, will further improve his performance in the coming years, and that is Robert Lewandowski. Leva has scored 76 goals for Poland so far.
Aleksandar Mitrovic is, for now, far from these three, and in front of him are currently: Thierry Henry (51), Rooney (53), Jan Koller (55), David Villa (59).
Also on the same number of goals (50) is another active player, Harry Kane, who will surely break Wayne Rooney’s record at the World Cup in Qatar and become the best scorer in the history of the English national team.
Of the EX YU players, in a high ninth place is the forward of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Edin Dzeko, who scored 63 goals for the “dragons”.
Mitrovic scored his first goal in the Serbian jersey back in 2013 in the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He scored a goal against Croatia on Miralem Sulejmani’s cross when he was only 18 years old!
