Malta Football Association President Bjorn Vassallo, who also serves as Chairman of UEFA’s Youth and Amateur Football Committee, presided over the UEFA Under-19 and Under-17 Championship draws in Nyon, Switzerland. The event determined the groups for the elite stages of the 2025 tournaments and the qualifying rounds for the 2026 editions.

Addressing national association delegates, Vassallo emphasized the significance of UEFA’s youth competitions in nurturing young talent for international football. He highlighted recent format changes, including the introduction of A and B championships with promotion and relegation, aimed at enhancing competitiveness and providing a clear pathway to final tournaments.

During the ceremony, Vassallo presented several awards:
– Maurice Burlaz Trophy: Awarded to Maurizio Viscidi, Technical Director of the Italian Football Federation, recognizing Italy’s achievements in UEFA men’s youth competitions.
– Respect and Fair Play Award: Presented to Norway Under-19 player Aleksander Andersen and France Under-17 player Yael Thebault for exemplary sportsmanship.
– Best Progression Award: Given to a representative of the Danish Football Federation, acknowledging significant development in youth football.
Vassallo’s leadership role within UEFA underscores the Malta FA’s esteemed position in European football, reflecting the country’s commitment to advancing the sport at all levels.
