Barcelona opened up a five-point lead at the top of La Liga after a 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, ending Los Rojiblancos’ 13-match unbeaten league run and reinforcing their credentials in the title fight.
Both sides flew out of the blocks, with chances at either end inside the first five minutes. Raphinha registered the first real sight of goal but blazed over, while Alex Baena was a constant outlet for Atleti, stretching the home defence with his intelligent movement.
Despite Barcelona dominating possession, Diego Simeone’s team were initially sharper in their passing. That superiority told midway through the first half when Baena timed his run to perfection from the centre circle, burst clear and finished coolly to give the visitors the lead.

The response from Barça was swift and relentless. With the hosts pouring forward, Atletico’s five-man back line looked solid at first, but they were finally breached just seven minutes after the opener. Raphinha broke in behind, rounded Jan Oblak and rolled in a composed equaliser to restore parity and ignite Camp Nou.
The pressure continued to mount. Dani Olmo was brought down in the area by Pablo Barrios, offering Robert Lewandowski a golden chance to complete the turnaround from the spot, but the Polish striker sent a dreadful penalty high into the stands. Oblak then redeemed his team again moments later, producing a world-class save to claw away Lewandowski’s powerful header and ensure the sides went in level at the interval.
Barcelona resumed after the break on the front foot, pressing aggressively and hunting in packs. Yet the first opportunity of the half fell to Atleti, with Julian Alvarez attempting a delicate chip that Joan Garcia gathered comfortably. Raphinha and Giuliano Simeone both dragged efforts wide when well placed, and Lewandowski was a fraction away from turning in another low cross from the Brazilian.

A frenetic spell followed, during which Baena pulled up with a hamstring injury and had to be replaced. Barça capitalised soon after. Olmo escaped his marker inside the box and slid a precise left-footed finish into the corner to make it 2-1, injuring himself in the act and immediately making way for Ferran Torres.
From that moment, Barcelona controlled possession and territory, but they were almost punished for wastefulness when Thiago Almada somehow failed to convert into an open goal for Atletico in one of the clearest chances of the night.
The closing stages resembled a pinball game, with the ball ricocheting around the Atleti area as the visitors chased an equaliser and Barça sought the killer blow. It finally arrived in the last minute of stoppage time, when Torres finished clinically to seal the 3-1 win and extinguish any remaining resistance.
This result means Barcelona have now lost just one of the last ten league meetings with Atletico (eight wins, one draw), with that defeat coming in last season’s corresponding fixture. Overall, it is their only loss in 20 La Liga home head-to-heads against Los Rojiblancos (14 wins, five draws), and this latest triumph could prove pivotal in the title race.
