Former England International Butland Brings Depth and Experience to Red Devils’ Goalkeeping Corps
Manchester United have announced the signing of Jack Butland as a backup goalkeeper, bringing in a player with a wealth of experience at the highest levels of the game.
Butland, 28, has nine caps for the England national team and has been a consistent presence in the Premier League for several years.
At United, he will compete with Tom Heaton for the role of second choice behind first-choice keeper David de Gea. The Spanish international has been a mainstay in the United goal for over a decade and is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
However, the signing of Butland adds much-needed depth and competition to the position, ensuring that the Red Devils are well-equipped in the event of any injuries or absences.
His last outing for the Three Lions came in a friendly against Switzerland in 2018, but he has remained a highly-rated goalkeeper at the club level.
His signing is a shrewd move by Manchester United, who will hope to see him push Heaton and De Gea for playing time as the season progresses.
Heaton is expected to be on the bench for United’s upcoming FA Cup match against Everton, while Butland could potentially see action in next week’s EFL Cup quarter-final against Charlton Athletic.
