Lee Carsley expressed his delight as England regained momentum in their Nations League journey with a 3-1 triumph over Finland on Sunday. Despite the win, the interim manager remains firm in stating he is not contemplating a permanent role.
England currently sits second in Group B2, trailing Greece, with nine points from four matches. This follows goals by Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice at Helsinki Olympic Stadium, bouncing back from Thursday’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Greece at home.
Carsley was satisfied with the team’s reaction after their disorganized loss at Wembley, marking his first challenge since Gareth Southgate’s departure as manager. However, he was reserved when questioned about his future goals.

“This position warrants a world-class coach who has secured trophies, and I am still on that journey,” stated Carsley, who had been leading England’s under-21s since 2021 before stepping in for the senior team. “I keep reiterating the same point. My assignment was six games, and I’m content with that,” he continued. “This is an esteemed role. I’m thoroughly enjoying it, although the last two days were tough. I’m not accustomed to losing with an England team; I don’t handle defeat well.”

Individuals will often attempt to take sides, but I find myself positioned in the centre. Nonetheless, Grealish and Rice were full of praise for their interim manager following Sunday’s triumph. “It’s been incredibly refreshing; he’s been honest, direct, and encourages us to play with freedom. You can see us lads performing exceptionally well and genuinely enjoying our time under him,” Rice commented. “Football is unpredictable with ups and downs; perfection is unattainable.” Grealish, omitted from Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, now boasts four goals for England, including his exquisite close-range finish that opened the scoring for the visitors in the 18th minute on Sunday—two of these goals have been scored under Carsley’s guidance.
“No matter what transpires with the England manager, there will always be detractors,” Grealish remarked. “Previously, people clamoured for all attacking players to feature, and it didn’t work against Greece on Thursday. I don’t understand it; such things can occur in matches. I relish my time here with a top-notch manager and truly enjoy playing for him.”
