De Leo Malta will face Luxembourg with open mind and no fear

Malta head coach Emilio De Leo has insisted that his side will approach the upcoming UEFA Nations League play-off against Luxembourg with an open mind, without overcomplicating the tie by thinking strategically across the full 180 minutes.

Speaking ahead of the first leg, De Leo made it clear that Malta will not change its identity because of the opposition or the occasion, stressing that the team must continue to play with the same personality and balance it has been building over recent months.

“We will not change who we are because of one game,” was the underlying message from the Malta coach, who said the team must interpret the match openly and confidently, without carrying the weight of national expectation on their shoulders.

De Leo explained that, regardless of the result, the players should not feel burdened by the pressure of an entire nation. Instead, they should embrace the moment with maturity, freedom, and belief, trusting the progress made within the squad.

The coach also addressed recent statistics showing Malta among the national teams with the highest number of yellow cards during the qualifying campaign. However, he insisted there is no sense of alarm within the camp, as he believes the side remains balanced and emotionally under control.

He also dismissed concerns about the goals Malta has conceded in the closing stages of matches, arguing that these were not the result of tactical shortcomings but rather isolated, unfortunate moments that do not reflect a structural weakness in the team.

For De Leo, the bigger picture is one of growth. He repeatedly returned to the idea that this Malta side is developing in maturity and confidence, and that the players must continue on that path without allowing the occasion to distort their approach.

Midfielder Matthew Guillaumier echoed that sense of calm determination. Reflecting on previous high-pressure matches, including the encounter against the Faroe Islands, he acknowledged that such experiences have helped shape the group, while also noting that some of the younger or newer players will now face this kind of pressure for the first time.

Both coach and player, however, were united in their message that Malta must remain consistent in its mentality and continue to build on what has already been achieved.

Turning to Luxembourg, De Leo acknowledged the challenge posed by opponents who are ranked higher and widely seen as favourites on paper, with several players competing in strong leagues. Yet he reminded everyone that matches are decided on the pitch, not by statistics or reputation.

On team news, the Malta coach confirmed that, apart from the suspended Joseph Mbong, the rest of the squad is in good condition heading into the match.

With an open approach, growing maturity and no intention of abandoning its identity, Malta now prepares for one of its most important matches in recent years, believing that the occasion should be faced with courage rather than fear.
