World number one Jannik Sinner expressed that he endeavoured to adapt and shield his performances from the ongoing doping controversy, which loomed over him, following his victory against Novak Djokovic with a score of 7-6(4), 6-3 to secure the Shanghai Masters title on Sunday. In August, the International Tennis Integrity Agency revealed that Sinner had failed two drug tests in March. However, he was exonerated by an independent tribunal. The tribunal accepted Sinner’s account that the anabolic substance clostebol had entered his system via a member of his support team through massages and sports therapy. Nonetheless, in September, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced its intention to appeal the tribunal’s decision and sought a suspension of up to two years for Sinner. WADA’s declaration came shortly before Sinner faced defeat at the hands of rival Carlos Alcaraz in the China Open final, with the U.S. and Australian Open champion acknowledging the challenging circumstances prior to his Shanghai Masters journey.

“This year has been incredibly challenging for me due to various circumstances, and at times I’ve felt my smile fade because of personal issues outside of the sport, which still linger in my mind,” Sinner shared with journalists following his victory in the final. “People assume that winning or achieving success means you have no problems, but that’s not the case, given my current situation. It’s certainly not ideal, and I wish I weren’t in this off-court position right now.

“However, acceptance is necessary. I believe I’m resilient when I step onto the court, doing my best to remain focused and giving my all, whether in matches or practice sessions.” Sinner’s triumph over 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic has increased his trophy tally for the year to seven, including two Grand Slams, three ATP Masters 1000 titles, and victories in Rotterdam and Halle.

This season has marked the 23-year-old’s most successful year on tour, and when queried about what had changed over the past year, Sinner remarked: “I feel physically prepared to compete at the highest level for extended periods.”
I am mentally prepared to face any challenging scenarios on the court, which I believe is my most significant advancement. I am striving to be mature enough to comprehend what works, and this has had a substantial effect on me this year. I am optimistic that this will also be beneficial for me in the coming year.
