Roma sign Mats Hummels on a free transfer

Roma has added yet another free agent to strengthen their defence, as Mats Hummels has officially signed a contract worth an estimated €3m per season.

Earlier, they had already secured Mario Hermoso as a replacement for Chris Smalling, who moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Fayha FC after the transfer deadline.

Initial negotiations with the German player had hit a roadblock, but they resumed yesterday, and he arrived for his medical examination before putting pen to paper this evening.

According to reports, Hummels’ contract is for one year, with an option to extend for a second season. His salary will be €3m, including bonuses based on performance.

The German footballer, who represented his country 78 times, will reach the age of 36 in December. Throughout his professional career, he has exclusively played for two clubs, namely Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

His contract with the latter club expired on June 30, and since then, he has been engaged in negotiations with several teams, including Real Sociedad.

Both Hummels and Hermoso joined Roma in time to be included in the squad list for the UEFA Europa League, which had to be submitted on Wednesday.
