Italian football mourns the loss of Aldo Agroppi at 80

The Italian football community is in mourning following the passing of Aldo Agroppi, a distinguished former player, coach, and television pundit. Agroppi died on 2 January 2025 at the age of 80 in his hometown of Piombino, Italy, after a prolonged illness.

Agroppi’s football journey began with Torino FC, where he made his Serie A debut in 1967. Over nearly a decade with the club, he amassed approximately 278 appearances and was instrumental in securing two Coppa Italia titles in the 1967–68 and 1970–71 seasons. His tenure at Torino culminated in winning the Serie A championship in the 1975–76 season, a historic achievement for the club. In addition to his time at Torino, Agroppi had stints with Perugia, Potenza, and Genoa, further showcasing his versatility and commitment to the field.

Transitioning into management, Agroppi began with the youth teams at Perugia before taking on roles at several Italian clubs. Notably, he led Pisa to promotion to Serie A in the 1981–82 season, marking a significant milestone in his coaching career. His managerial journey also included periods at Padova, Fiorentina, Como, and Ascoli. During his time at Fiorentina, Agroppi faced challenges, particularly concerning the management of club legend Giancarlo Antognoni, which led to tensions with the fanbase. Despite these hurdles, he guided Fiorentina to a commendable fourth-place finish in Serie A during the 1985–86 season.

Beyond his on-field and managerial contributions, Agroppi was known for his candid commentary as a television pundit, offering insights that resonated with fans and players alike. His passing leaves a significant void in Italian football, with many remembering him not only for his achievements but also for his passionate dedication to the sport.

As the football world reflects on Agroppi’s legacy, his impact on Italian football—as a player, coach, and commentator—will be fondly remembered and revered by many.
