On Friday, Belgium’s football federation announced that Rudi Garcia, a 60-year-old Frenchman, will be the new national team coach, following the dismissal of Domenico Tedesco. The federation said they would officially introduce Garcia to the press at an event later in the day.
Garcia, who has also managed clubs like Napoli, Lyon, Roma, and Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, will be tasked with revitalising the Red Devils after a disappointing EURO 2024 campaign.
Belgium sacked Tedesco last week after a poor performance in the European Championship this summer and underwhelming results in the Nations League. Belgium now faces a relegation play-off against Ukraine in March.
Garcia’s most recent managerial role was a short, unsuccessful five-month spell at Napoli in 2023, following their title-winning season.
Garcia made a name for himself as a coach at French club Lille between 2008 and 2013.
Belgium’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign will begin with a match against North Macedonia in June.
Tedesco had been appointed in February 2023 to replace Roberto Martinez and help rebuild the squad after the “golden generation” of players left.
