Atalanta hammer Cesena to reach Coppa Italia quarter-finals

Atalanta comfortably reached the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday after beating second-division team Cesena 6-1.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s team will play Bologna in the next round, thanks to a dominant display in Bergamo, where they were 3-0 up within 30 minutes.

Davide Zappacosta opened the scoring after just four minutes, and Charles De Ketelaere and Lazar Samardzic both scored twice. Marco Brescianini added a fifth in the 54th minute.

Atalanta, who are two points ahead of Napoli at the top of Serie A, will host Empoli on Sunday.

Cesena, who scored through Joseph Ceesay in the last minute, will continue their promotion bid, sitting fifth in Serie B, in the play-off spots. They are 12 points off automatic promotion and will visit Juve Stabia on Sunday.
