Ħamrun Spartans will be aiming to return to winning ways on Friday night when they face Żabbar at the National Stadium, looking to respond strongly after their Super Cup disappointment earlier this week. The Spartans had enjoyed an impressive league campaign, collecting 34 points in the opening round and maintaining an eight match unbeaten run in the Premier League, underlining their title credentials despite the recent setback.
Giacomo Modica’s side remain among the most consistent teams this season, with key attacking threats such as Joseph Mbong, Matias Garcia and Damir Ceter providing goals and creativity. Mbong in particular has been influential with six league goals and seven assists, highlighting his importance in Hamrun’s attacking structure.
Their opponents Żabbar arrive in difficult form, having failed to pick up a single point in the closing round and currently on a five match losing streak in the league. The South side have also struggled defensively, conceding regularly and going five matches without a clean sheet, placing additional pressure on coach Gilbert Agius as he prepares for his first league encounter in charge against Hamrun this season.
Historically, Hamrun have held the upper hand in this fixture, winning six of the last ten league meetings between the sides and already defeating Żabbar earlier this campaign. With another demanding week ahead that includes clashes against Hibernians and Marsaxlokk, the Spartans will be determined to bounce back immediately and reassert their momentum in the YoHealth Malta Premier League title race.
