Danish football player Christian Eriksen has said that it is a “special feeling” to return to the World Cup with the national team after returning to football after suffering a heart attack during a match at the European Championship 2021.
I have already participated in the World Cup, and I am very happy to return to the World Cup. “The accident I had made me value life and be with my family, leaving everything else aside,” said Eriksen.
Eriksen collapsed during the June 2021 Denmark-Finland match in Copenhagen and had to be resuscitated on the pitch.
Despite promising his wife that he would never play football again, eight months later he returned to competition thanks to an implanted heart defibrillator.
He had to leave his previous club, Inter, because Italy does not allow footballers to use this device. He moved to England to play for Brentford, and this summer he became a Manchester United player.
On Tuesday, Denmark will play the first match at the World Cup against Tunisia, and France and Australia are also in the group.
We beat France away in the League of Nations, but they are the second team in the big competition. “We know what we are doing, and we can’t wait for the championship to start,” he said.
Denmark assistant coach Morten Vihorst said Eriksen was an “inspiration” to his teammates and the entire country.
“I think he is even better than before the accident, if that is possible,” he said.
