Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has been spotted in training for the first time since his severe head injury against Millwall in the FA Cup last week.
The French forward required 26 stitches after a devastating collision when Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts kicked him in the head during Palace’s 3-1 win in the fifth round tie. The incident occurred early in the match as Roberts challenged for the ball but crashed into Mateta, catching his head with his boot studs, resulting in a red card following VAR consultation.
Roberts’ suspension has been increased to six matches after Palace chairman Steve Parish described it as “the worst tackle I’ve ever witnessed in football.” While there were concerns about a prolonged absence for Mateta, Eagles supporters received encouraging news as the forward was observed training with a smile.
Mateta appeared in footage captured by teammate Chris Richards on his Instagram profile, showing the striker wearing protective headgear and a bandage on his left ear.

Richards teased Mateta about his appearance, comparing him to American tennis star Francis Tiafoe. Mateta, who was in the gym following a trainer’s guidance, noticed Richards recording and flashed a grin before continuing his workout.
Despite the seriousness of Mateta’s wound, Palace remain optimistic about his return before month-end for their FA Cup quarter-final clash against Fulham on March 29. Head coach Oliver Glasner provided an update: “Mateta is progressing well,” Glasner stated on Friday. “He’s recuperating at home and making good progress.
“There were no fractures or concussion, and the substantial wound is healing as anticipated. He’ll join us in Marbella next week for individual training sessions. If everything proceeds according to plan, he should be ready for the Fulham match [in their FA Cup quarter-final on 29 March].
