Chelsea edge Forest to seal Champions League return

Before kick-off, Nottingham Forest fans displayed a banner reading “Destination: Europe,” marking the club’s return to continental competition for the first time since 1995-96. However, hopes of reaching the Champions League ended in frustration as Chelsea secured a 1–0 win.

Levi Colwill scored the only goal of the match, finishing from close range after a chaotic defensive sequence. Cole Palmer’s cross was cleared by Murillo, but Neco Williams’ header redirected the ball into Pedro Neto’s path. Neto misfired, but Colwill was free at the back post to convert. It was only his second goal of the season.

Forest’s best chance came just before half-time when Chris Wood volleyed over from Ola Aina’s cross. In stoppage time, Matz Sels sent a long ball to Wood, who controlled it well but, under pressure, shot over.

Chelsea’s victory confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League. Forest, who would have qualified had they won and results elsewhere held, must settle for a place in the Conference League. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo admitted the outcome was hard to take, saying, “One goal could change everything.”

Matz Sels was recognised for sharing the Premier League Golden Glove with Arsenal’s David Raya, both keeping 13 clean sheets. Nikola Milenkovic was named Forest’s Player of the Season.

Chelsea now head to Wroclaw for the Conference League final against Real Betis, while Forest prepare for their first European campaign in nearly three decades.
