Bruno Fernandes leads Manchester United fightback at Goodison Park

Manchester United staged a dramatic second-half comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park, overturning a two-goal deficit to deny David Moyes’ side all three points. Despite the disappointment of letting their lead slip, Everton remain unbeaten in their last six Premier League games under their former manager.

Coming into the match as the in-form side, Everton started strongly, pressing United’s defence and creating early chances. Beto had the first real opportunity, rising to meet a cross but directing his header straight at André Onana.

The home side’s relentless pressure soon paid off. United struggled to clear a scrappy corner, and after a flicked header from Abdoulaye Doucouré, the ball landed for Beto, who lashed his volley into the roof of the net. That strike, his fifth in four league games, further ignited Everton’s momentum.

Moyes’ side doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark. Beto, involved once again, delivered a first-time cross to Jack Harrison, whose powerful shot was superbly saved by Onana. However, the rebound fell kindly for Doucouré, who outjumped United’s defence to head home Everton’s second.

United struggled to respond, registering barely a chance in a one-sided first half. Their only relief came when Noussair Mazraoui slid in to deny Beto from grabbing a second.

United showed slight improvement after the break, but Everton continued to dominate, with Onana again called into action to keep out Doucouré’s volley. However, with 20 minutes remaining, United finally found a breakthrough.

Alejandro Garnacho was fouled on the edge of the box, setting up a free-kick opportunity for Bruno Fernandes. The United captain wrong-footed Jordan Pickford, curling the ball into the far corner to pull one back for the visitors.

Suddenly, the momentum shifted. Within 10 minutes, United completed their comeback. Everton failed to clear a set-piece, and the ball fell to Manuel Ugarte, who fired home from the edge of the area to make it 2-2.

With the game now wide open, both sides had late chances. Pickford produced a stunning save to tip over Fernandes’ long-range effort, ensuring United did not complete the turnaround.

Deep into stoppage time, Everton were awarded a penalty after Ashley Young went down under Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge, but VAR overturned the decision, much to the frustration of the Goodison Park crowd.

Despite throwing away a two-goal lead, Everton remain unbeaten in six league matches, showing continued progress under David Moyes. Beto and Doucouré were standout performers once again, proving pivotal in Everton’s improved attacking form.

For Manchester United, the fightback showcased a rare display of resilience, something that has been lacking for much of the season. Rúben Amorim will take encouragement from his team’s final 20-minute performance, but questions remain over their slow starts and defensive fragility.

As the season enters a crucial phase, both teams will need to build on this result—Everton to keep their upward trajectory, and United to turn brief spells of quality into consistent performances.
