A disaster and an unprecedented tragedy happened last night in Indonesia when 174 fans died in a stampede that arose after a match in East Java between Arema and Persebaya.
Chaos broke out after the police fired tear gas at the clashing fans. In the stampede, many of the victims were run over to death.
It is estimated that around 300 people sought help in local hospitals after the match. However, many died on the way to the doctor.
Indonesia’s defense minister said the number of spectators at the stadium exceeded capacity by four thousand, and the country’s president, Joko Widodo ordered the suspension of all football matches until the investigation was completed.
The match was allegedly attended by 42 thousand people, while the capacity of the stadium is 38 thousand, and President Widodo called this incident “the last football tragedy in the country”.
