Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea said he wants to end his career at that football club. The contract of the 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper expires at the end of the season, the club management offers a one-year contract, but a multi-year contract is being negotiated.
Asked about the contract situation, De Gea said: “I’m very relaxed”
“I am focused on training, to play the best I can. But it is certain that it will end in a good way. I hope to stay for the rest of my career. I said that this is my club, I’ve been here for many, many years, it’s a great honor and I’m happy to be here” said De Gea, Sky reported.
United is trying to bring in a new goalkeeper as competition for De Gea, after Martin Dubravka returned to Newcastle, leaving only Tom Heaton.
Among the candidates is Jack Butland, whose contract with Crystal Palace expires in the summer. Sky has reported that Manchester United wants to negotiate a fee for the 29-year-old goalkeeper now, rather than in the summer.
Butland has yet to play a game for Crystal Palace this season and appears to be looking to switch midfield.
Manchester United has also been monitoring Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, but he will not come if De Gea signs a new contract.
United is currently fourth in the table with 35 points, the same number as third-placed Newcastle. Manchester City in second place has more points, while first-placed Arsenal has 44 points.
The team improved their form with 13 wins in their last 16 games in all competitions, led by coach Eric ten Haag.
“He is doing well. He directs every player in the same direction and we feel like a real team. Everyone wants to win, and everyone wants to play for this club and that’s a huge thing. He brought a great spirit to this team, we are playing really well and we have to continue like that”, stated De Gea.
