Maltese Gymnasts shine with several medal successes at the Mediterranean Gymnastics Championships

Sophie St John, Julia and Janet Galea delivered a brilliant performance at the 8th Mediterranean Gymnastics Championships, winning four medals and showcasing Malta’s growing presence in international gymnastics.

Representing the Malta Gymnastics Federation, St John impressed in a highly competitive field, securing Silver on Beam with a score of 13.10 and Bronze on Vault with a strong 12.475. Her achievements mark another historic milestone for Maltese gymnastics.

Janet and Julia Galea, who also represented the Malta Gymnastics Federation, made their mark with exceptional performances in the Pre-Junior category, competing for the first time under the official FIG Junior program.

Despite forming a team of only two gymnasts, while other countries had three athletes and could select their best two scores, the Galea twins rose to the occasion with standout routines, obtaining a Bronze overall.

Julia Galea qualified for all four apparatus finals, an impressive display of consistency and technical excellence. Janet Galea qualified for three apparatus finals, highlighting her strength and artistry on the international stage.

The 8th Mediterranean Gymnastics Championships brought together young talent from across the region, with Malta represented by Sophie St John and the Galea twins, Janet and Julia, who all delivered strong routines and showed excellent determination throughout the competition.

A special mention goes to Coach Nataliya Berehova, whose expertise and leadership continue to drive Malta’s gymnasts to new levels. All three Maltese gymnasts competed with full, non-modified programs under FIG Junior rules, underlining the country’s increasing technical standard and ambition in elite gymnastics.

The Malta Gymnastics Federation expressed immense pride in the team’s performances, describing the week as “a clear sign of progress, dedication, and international competitiveness.”

This achievement was made possible through the ongoing support of SportMalta and the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC), whose funding plays a key role in enabling Maltese athletes to compete on the international stage. Special thanks were also extended to Quatro Leotards for their continued partnership with the national team.
