Spanish shot-stopper reportedly willing to reduce wages in order to secure long-term deal at Old Trafford.
David de Gea is reportedly willing to take a pay cut in order to secure a new long-term contract at Manchester United. The Spanish shot-stopper’s current deal expires in June 2024, however, the Red Devils recently activated a 12-month extension which will see him at Old Trafford until the end of the 2023/24 season.
According to The Sun, De Gea is eager to secure a minimum three-year deal and is willing to reduce his wages of £375,000 per week to achieve this. The report claims that the goalkeeper wants “security” when it comes to his future, and is prepared to take a pay cut of over 25% to gain a new contract.
De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has made over 500 appearances for the club since then. This season, he has kept 12 clean sheets in 26 appearances across all competitions. Despite reported interest from other clubs, Man United manager Erik ten Hag has reassured De Gea that the club has no plans to sign a new number one.

De Gea has previously spoken about his desire to remain at Old Trafford for the long-term, saying “I hope (to stay for the rest of my career). I was saying this is my club, I’ve been here many, many years and it’s a huge honor to be here and I’m so happy here.”
With a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success, De Gea’s potential new deal would be a huge boost for Manchester United as they compete on multiple fronts this season, including a crucial league match against Arsenal on Sunday.
