In the first ever top-flight encounter between the renowned clubs hailing from Germany’s two major cities Union Berlin and St. Pauli, Hollerbach managed to break the stalemate in the 34th minute by unleashing a powerful shot through a crowded penalty area which gave the home team the 3 points
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession in the second half, Pauli struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities as Union, who have an unblemished record of not losing a Bundesliga match when leading at halftime, held their ground and secured their first league victory of the season.
Although the visitors dominated possession in the early stages, it was Union who had the better scoring opportunities, with US forward Jordan narrowly missing the target after just four minutes.
The home team seized the advantage after 34 minutes when Hollerbach struck a corner that deflected off visiting goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
With this triumph, Union now find themselves sitting at the summit of the Bundesliga table, while St Pauli have suffered defeat in both of their opening matches this campaign.
Pauli, under the guidance of 31-year-old coach Fabian Huerzeler, clinched promotion from the second division last season, marking their return to the Bundesliga after an absence since 2010-11. However, Huerzeler departed for Brighton during the summer.
On Saturday, the reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen will be hosting RB Leipzig, while Bayern Munich will face Freiburg at their home ground on Sunday.
