Super Steve Martin used only his left hand in an ‘Underground’ sparring session that was streamed live on Fight Island PPV platform
Malta’s top boxer, Super Steve Martin, failed to knock down either of his two challengers in a three-minute round against each of them. This informal and unofficial event took place on Sunday evening, streamed live via a Pay-per-view service provided by Fight Island.
Aspiring professional boxers Andriy John and Scott “Flakey” Schembri had been taunting Steve Martin for several months, after he had previously expressed doubts about their goal of becoming professional boxers within 360 days, deeming it unrealistic.
This ongoing online banter between Martin and the masterminds behind Fight Island, Andriy and Scott, took an unexpected turn on 5th October. During a DAZN boxing broadcast organised by Vaughan Group, Martin entered the ring wearing a black shirt emblazoned with ‘FU*K FLAKEY’. Scott “Flakey” Schembri was among the spectators, and following Martin’s first-round knockout victory, he startled everyone by confronting Martin in his corner to challenge him to a sparring match.
Fight Island laid out the rules, with Steve Martin agreeing to face both Andriy and Flakey in separate three-minute rounds using only his left hand. The contract, drafted by the two promoters and aspiring pro boxers, included a EUR5,000 penalty for Martin if he used his right hand during the sparring matches.
Flakey had pledged to quit boxing if Steve Martin knocked him out within the first 10 seconds. However, this didn’t happen, as both fighters remained standing until the end of their respective bouts.
Scott “Flakey” Schembri had also stipulated that if Martin failed to knock him out in the first 10 seconds, he would choose Martin’s opponent for the upcoming ‘Fight Island 2’ in November. Flakey had claimed on social media that Steve Martin always selected ‘easy’ opponents.
The pay-per-view event was watched live by over 1,500 viewers, surpassing Flakey’s and Andriy’s expectations.
