Kai Azzopardi and Danica Bonello Spiteri emerged victorious in the National Standard Distance Triathlon Championships, held last Sunday under the organisation of the Malta Triathlon Federation.
The event, based on the Olympic triathlon format, featured a 1.5-kilometre swim, a 40-kilometre cycle and a 10-kilometre run. It is considered one of the most gruelling endurance challenges in sport, with athletes competing against the clock across all three disciplines, including transitions.
Eighteen-year-old Azzopardi delivered a sensational performance to win the men’s category in a time of 1:58:34 — smashing the previous course record by six minutes and becoming the first athlete to complete the course in under two hours.
In the women’s race, seasoned triathlete Danica Bonello Spiteri once again underlined her dominance in the sport, securing first place with an impressive time of 2:17:00.
The victories mark significant milestones for both athletes — a breakthrough result for the young Azzopardi and further affirmation of Bonello Spiteri’s enduring excellence on the national triathlon stage.
