The United Nations General Assembly has adopted the Olympic Truce Resolution for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The resolution, supported by 165 UN Member States, calls on nations to observe the Truce and ensure athletes, officials, and other accredited participants can take part safely.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry welcomed the resolution, highlighting the role of sport in uniting people: “When athletes come together, they do not see nationality, religion or background. They see each other as fellow athletes. This is the spirit of the Olympic Truce: a call to focus on what unites us.”
Giovanni Malagò, President of the Milano Cortina 2026 Organising Committee, emphasised the Games’ message of Armonia – Harmony, rooted in Italian culture and history. “The Olympic and Paralympic Games of Milano Cortina 2026 will be a unifying event, promoting peace through sport,” he said.
The resolution highlights the importance of cooperation between nations, the IOC, the International Paralympic Committee, and the UN. It recognises athletes’ leadership in promoting peace and understanding and notes that Milano Cortina 2026 will be the most gender-balanced Winter Games ever, reinforcing equal opportunities for male and female athletes.
The Olympic Truce has its origins in Ancient Greece, when it allowed safe participation in the Games despite conflicts between city-states. Revived by the IOC in the 1990s, it aims to protect athletes and promote peace, dialogue, and reconciliation worldwide.
