With two rounds of group matches now completed at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the race to reach the knockout stage is intensifying. Finally, if all other methods fail to separate the teams:
7. FIFA resorts to the drawing of lots, a random method used only as a last resort to break the tie.
This step-by-step system, while complex, is designed to be as fair as possible and to reward teams not just for winning but also for playing positively and with discipline. It also places strong emphasis on direct results between the teams involved, which often carry the most weight in these tightly contested groups.
With only one group match remaining for each team, coaches and players are acutely aware that every goal, every tackle, and even every booking could tip the balance in their group. As matchday three approaches, the margins have never been finer.
