FIFA opens new office in Trump Tower ahead of 2026 World Cup

FIFA has opened a new office in Trump Tower, New York, to strengthen its presence in the United States before the 2026 World Cup. This new base in Manhattan joins its existing office in Miami and is part of FIFA’s efforts to grow football in North America.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino led the opening ceremony, saying the move shows how important it is for FIFA to be present in key places around the world. “FIFA is a global organisation, so we must be local too. That’s why we’re here in New York,” he said.

The choice of Trump Tower is also seen as a sign of the close relationship between Infantino and President Donald Trump, who is now serving his second term. Infantino has often appeared alongside Trump, including at the White House and on trips to Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Trump is expected to attend the final of the new 32-team Club World Cup on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, the same venue that will host the final of the 2026 World Cup. Infantino praised the support from the US government and said it had helped FIFA deliver its tournaments smoothly.

However, not everything is going smoothly. Trump’s strict immigration policies have raised concerns, with new travel bans proposed for 36 more countries. Critics say this could reduce international attendance at FIFA events. Ticket sales for the Club World Cup have also been slow, partly due to high prices and low local interest in football.

Recent immigration raids in California, especially in Los Angeles, have also caused alarm. These have led to protests and increased worry for foreign fans.

Despite this, FIFA says it will continue to welcome fans from all countries. The organisation is working hard to prepare for the 2026 tournament, which will be the biggest in World Cup history, with 48 teams playing across 16 cities in the US, Mexico, and Canada.

By opening a second US office, FIFA aims to manage the massive planning needed for the event. But setting up in Trump Tower has added a political twist to what is supposed to be a sporting celebration.

Only time will tell whether Trump’s policies will help or harm the growth of football in the US, and whether this move by FIFA will be seen as a smart step or a risky one.
