Suarez announces Uruguay retirement

Uruguay’s top scorer Luis Suarez set to hang up his international boots

The 37-year-old striker struggled to hold back tears as he revealed that Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Saturday will mark his final match for his nation.

The ex-Liverpool and Barcelona star holds the record as Uruguay’s highest goalscorer, netting 69 times in 142 games since his national debut versus Colombia in February 2007.

“I’ve been mulling this over for a while. I feel now is the right moment,” Suarez stated.

“I want to be at ease during my last game for the national side. I’ll be just as thrilled to play as I was in 2007 when I first represented my country.

“That 19-year-old lad is now a seasoned player, an older footballer – whatever you’d like to call it – with a remarkable journey with the national team, who’ll give his all for the squad.”
