Carlos Alcaraz says his “first goal” for 2026 is to win the Australian Open and complete the Career Grand Slam after defeating Jannik Sinner to claim a second US Open title, and his sixth major, in New York. The 22-year-old beat the world No 1, 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4, to return to the top of the rankings for the first time since 2023.
Alcaraz, who lost to Sinner in the Wimbledon final in July, produced a far more controlled performance in Sunday’s rematch, dropping his first set of the tournament but otherwise asserting with pace, variety and a markedly improved serve. He conceded only one set across the fortnight. “It’s my first goal… Australian Open is there,” he said, outlining Melbourne as the missing piece in his set of majors.
The result deepens a burgeoning rivalry that has defined the 2025 season: Sinner retained the Australian Open, Alcaraz edged an epic Roland Garros final, Sinner struck back at Wimbledon, and New York belonged to the Spaniard. Alcaraz now leads their head-to-head 10–5.
Juan Carlos Ferrero hailed his player’s display as “perfect”, praising Alcaraz’s tactical clarity after weeks of work tailored to Sinner’s patterns. The champion agreed with his coach’s assessment in press, framing the win as proof of his progress since SW19.
If Alcaraz lifts the trophy at Melbourne Park next January, he would become the youngest man to complete the Career Grand Slam, surpassing compatriot Rafael Nadal, who achieved the feat at 24 in 2010. “Obviously I’m going to try to do it next year,” Alcaraz said, adding that the pursuit will define his preseason.
Victory at Flushing Meadows also ends Sinner’s 65-week reign at No 1 and underlines Alcaraz’s momentum heading into the autumn swing. For now, the scoreboard reads two US Opens and six majors, and a clear target: Melbourne.
