Neil Agius completes the Gozo 7 expressing that “Gozo is in my heart”

On Saturday, 6 September 2025, world record swimmer Neil Agius set off from Dwejra at 11:00 for the final leg of his seven-day challenge around Gozo. After the visible fatigue of Day 6, he managed the conditions with measured pacing and tight crew coordination before bringing his seventh consecutive swim to a close at Marsalforn beach, near Otters, at around 21:30. He covered 22.71 km on Day 7, approximately 54% of the Gozo loop, to complete his week-long mission.

Agius, exhausted yet elated at the finish, praised his team and spoke about his connection to the island. “Incredible experience to swim around this island for 7 days in a row. I connected so much with the ocean, I connected with the cliffs. Gozo is an extremely, extremely special place.” He underlined how the crew made the effort possible: “The only way that I could have been able to do this and swim around, swim between 13 and 15 hours a day, and to sleep between one and three, sometimes four hours, was because there was a huge team behind me doing everything else for me. Go team!”

Across the seven days, Agius typically targeted about 15 hours in the water per attempt, mirroring the arc of a waking day and leaning on breathwork, movement and community to manage the physical and mental load. The Gozo 7 was conceived as a scientific exploration of resilience rather than a world record attempt, with ongoing monitoring of fatigue, cognition and emotional state to understand how humans respond to sustained stress at sea. He swam in a swimsuit, cap and goggles only, with no-contact feeds passed on poles and lines, keeping the process as pure and repeatable as possible.

The ethos of the challenge remained constant from first stroke to last: know yourself, respect your limits, and find ways to thrive through recovery and teamwork. “The Ocean Mindset is not about pushing beyond your limits. It is about knowing yourself and finding ways to thrive through breathwork, movement and the power of community,” Agius has said during the week. At Ramla and Marsalforn, the message resonated with supporters who turned out daily, reflecting the bond he described. “It’s a place in my heart and now even deeper. It’s an amazing place, I love it.”

Malta Sport has followed Neil Agius for several days with exclusive behind-the-scenes access and interviews. We congratulate Neil on completing 274.71 km over seven days and salute the entire team that made the Gozo 7 possible.
