Fenerbahçe part ways with José Mourinho after Champions League failure

Fenerbahçe have sacked head coach José Mourinho after the club failed to reach the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Mourinho, appointed in June 2024, finished second in the Turkish Süper Lig in his only full season in charge but could not guide Fenerbahçe past Benfica in this season’s Champions League play-offs. The Istanbul side failed to score across the two legs, a setback the club confirmed on Friday would be his final act.

While last season’s league campaign was not disastrous, Fenerbahçe trailed champions Galatasaray by a significant margin, and Mourinho drew criticism for an inconsistent identity and lack of a clear playing style. The Champions League exit earlier this week appears to have been decisive for the hierarchy.

Fenerbahçe have yet to announce who will take charge on an interim basis.
