The first Intercontinental Derby of the season delivered high drama but no winner, as Fenerbahce and Galatasaray shared a tense 1-1 draw in Istanbul. The result allowed Trabzonspor to close the gap at the top of the Super Lig, tightening an already compelling title race.
Fenerbahce entered Monday night’s showdown knowing that victory would take them above their fierce rivals for the first time this season. Galatasaray, champions for three consecutive years, travelled across the city severely depleted, with a long injury list threatening to derail their momentum. Even so, both Victor Osimhen and Mario Lemina returned to the starting eleven, although neither player looked fully fit.

Despite having won only one of their last eight derbies coming into the match, Fenerbahce were widely expected to take advantage of Galatasaray’s fragile form and secure their first home success against them since 2022. Backed by a raucous crowd and carrying more momentum than their rivals, the hosts sensed a major opportunity.

What followed, however, was a chaotic contest. Referee Yasin Kol struggled to maintain control, with numerous interruptions for soft fouls and several questionable decisions that reflected the ongoing concerns surrounding officiating in Turkish football.
Galatasaray, despite their injuries, started the brighter of the two. After a period of early dominance, they took the lead when Leroy Sané’s shot took a heavy deflection that wrong-footed goalkeeper Ederson. Clear chances remained scarce, though, with both sides producing a strangely flat performance in such a high-stakes fixture.
In the second half, Galatasaray dropped deeper and were content to allow Fenerbahce the ball, trusting their defensive structure to protect the narrow advantage. The hosts struggled to break through, lacking precision and creativity in the final third. As the minutes ticked away, however, fatigue became a factor for the visitors, whose patched-up squad began to tire noticeably.
Their resistance finally broke in the 95th minute. Levent Mercan delivered a superb cross from the left, and Jhon Durán rose highest to head home a dramatic equaliser, sparking wild celebrations inside Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.
In the end, a draw was arguably the fairest outcome. Fenerbahce will feel they missed a huge chance to beat a weakened Galatasaray at home, while the champions will be frustrated that they failed to see out a victory that would have been a major psychological boost.
Although Galatasaray stay top of the table, the stalemate opened the door for an in-form challenger.
The biggest beneficiaries of Monday’s derby were Trabzonspor, who continued their outstanding season under Fatih Tekke. They extended their unbeaten run to nine matches with a 3-1 win over Konyaspor, a result powered by the excellent Paul Onuachu, who scored twice to take his league tally to 11 goals, more than any other player in the Super Lig.
Ernest Muçi also found the net, delivering his second strong performance in a row and further elevating Trabzonspor’s attacking threat.
The win kept Tekke’s side in third place, but crucially brought them to within two points of leaders Galatasaray. Whether they can maintain this pace deep into the season remains to be seen, but the signs are increasingly promising. Trabzonspor have developed into a genuine title contender.
With three sides now firmly in the race, the Super Lig is shaping into one of the most competitive seasons in years. The derby may not have produced a winner, but it has undoubtedly raised the stakes for everyone.
