Rune ends Alcaraz's streak with dominant Barcelona title win

Holger Rune brought Carlos Alcaraz’s nine-match winning streak to a sudden halt on Sunday at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, capturing his first title of the 2025 season with a powerful, composed performance in a high-stakes final.

The 21-year-old Dane, seeded sixth, held his nerve to claim a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory and lift his fifth ATP Tour trophy, turning the tide after trailing early in the opening set and then dominating the second to shut the door on the two-time defending champion.

“It means the world,” Rune said post-match. “Carlos plays incredible tennis, so I had to find my rhythm and settle in. Once I did, especially after getting broken, I started playing my game. That first set was a real battle—it gave me the momentum, and I’m super proud of how I handled it.”

A Match of Fine Margins and Fierce Momentum

What began as a tightly contested baseline slugfest quickly revealed the mental and tactical edge Rune brought into this final. Despite falling behind a break early in the first set, Rune reeled off eight straight points to swing the momentum in his favor. Alcaraz dug deep to save two set points at 4-5—one with a delicate drop shot—but Rune’s persistence paid off in the tie-break, which he sealed after Alcaraz committed his 10th forehand unforced error.

“I reminded myself not to overhit,” Rune said. “I thought of how Novak beat him—just keeping balls deep and consistent. That mindset helped me settle and play with bravery in the key moments.”

The second set saw Alcaraz take a medical timeout after the third game, treating what appeared to be a nagging issue with his upper right leg. Upon returning, the Spaniard’s movement was clearly hindered, and Rune capitalized, saving all four break points he faced while keeping his own game tidy and focused. Alcaraz’s unforced error count ballooned to 33, and he was unable to win another game.

Rune’s Clay-Court Resurgence

This victory marked a strong rebound for Rune, who was forced to retire from his Monte-Carlo opener last week due to food poisoning. In Barcelona, however, he looked rejuvenated and razor-sharp. Along the way, he defeated defending champion Casper Ruud and delivered a statement win over Alcaraz, an 18-time tour-level titleholder, to clinch his third career clay-court title.

With the win, Rune jumps back into the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings, rising from No. 13 to No. 9. Alcaraz, who was gunning for his third title of the year (after Rotterdam and Monte-Carlo), relinquishes his No. 2 ranking to Alexander Zverev, following the German’s title run in Munich.

A Rivalry in the Making

This was the first ATP final between two players aged 21 and under since 2022, and it did not disappoint. The result levels their Lexus ATP Head2Head record at 2-2, setting the stage for many more electrifying matchups to come.

“Congratulations Holger on an amazing week,” said Alcaraz during the trophy ceremony. “To come from Monte-Carlo, where you had to retire, and then play like this—it shows your strength. We’ve known each other since we were 12. It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come.”

As Rune hoisted the trophy, it was clear this wasn’t just another tournament win—it was a statement of intent from a rising star who’s steadily proving he belongs among the elite.
