Russian Daniil Medvedev did not make a name for himself at the US Open this year, so he ended the competition in the round of 16, where he was outplayed by Nick Kyrgios.
The best tennis player in the world was again defeated by Kyrgios, this time with a score of 7:6 (11), 3:6, 6:3, 6:2.
” Nick played well. It was tied until the third set, from then on he was better than me. I started to feel physically weaker then, I think that was the key. I don’t know how he was. I started to feel more tired. It’s a shame because I was a bit sick. I happen to get sick at least once during the summer American series, which is silly. Last year it happened to me in Cincinnati. It was good because I usually don’t get sick two or three times in a couple of weeks,” Medvedev began and continued:
” The thing is that in the dressing room or somewhere inside I can cover myself. Even in the dressing room it was 20 degrees, no more. You take a shower, you sweat, then you get out. If you relax a little and sit for five minutes after the match, you can catch a cold. I felt that my throat was scratching during the day. Maybe that played a role. Again, I wouldn’t use that as an excuse because Nick really played well, he beat me in Montreal, I wasn’t sick there,” says Daniil.
He congratulated Kyrgios with the recognition…
” And in Montreal he was good. It was a high level match. I played with Novak, Rafa, they all play great. Nick played at their level today. He has a slightly different game. He also knows how to stay in the rally. It is difficult to play with him, he has a satisfying serve. You don’t feel you have an advantage in points because he has good shots. If he plays like this until the end of the tournament, he has a chance to win it. However, they will have tough opponents, for sure.”
“It was only once, the first set, at 6:5 for him, 40:30 on my serve. Before the second service, someone from his box shouted, “come on, you’ve got it”. It’s not nice, it shouldn’t be done when you’re from someone else’s box. I told the judge that. I don’t know who it was exactly. I don’t know the people from his team, but we talked in the dressing room. I respect them like everyone else. However, at the end of the match, I said, it shouldn’t have happened. It was a man’s voice. Only once, so maybe it’s not intentional, I hope,” Daniil Medvedev concluded.
