Flavio Cobolli claimed the biggest win of his career on Saturday, defeating third seed Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4 to capture the ATP 500 title at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open.
The 23-year-old Italian delivered a composed, aggressive performance, using his athleticism to absorb Rublev’s power and staying steady under pressure. He saved two break points while serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set before sealing victory in 90 minutes. Cobolli dropped to the ground in celebration before embracing Rublev and acknowledging the crowd.
“I think it’s the best moment and match of my life,” Cobolli said. “I have to say sorry to Andrey because today I played unbelievable. I’m so happy and proud. Seeing my family, friends, brother, and girlfriend here was a big surprise. I just want to lift the trophy.”
This is Cobolli’s second ATP title, both won on clay, following his maiden triumph in Bucharest earlier this year. With the win, he climbs nine places to No. 26 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, a new career high.
Rublev, the 2020 Hamburg champion, was seeking his second title of the season after winning in Doha. Despite a solid run to the final, he struggled to match Cobolli’s intensity from the baseline, finishing with 10 fewer winners and falling to 0–1 in their head-to-head. The loss follows a recent ranking dip after failing to defend points in Madrid, but Rublev moves up two spots to No. 15 in the Live Rankings.
