Djokovic names Dusan Vemic as new coach ahead of French Open after split with Murray

Novak Djokovic has appointed long-time friend and former doubles partner Dusan Vemic as his coach for the Geneva Open and the upcoming French Open, following his recent split with Andy Murray.

“Dusan Vemic, the captain of the Serbian BJK Cup team, he was in my team a few years ago (and is my coach),” Djokovic told reporters on Tuesday in Geneva. “He’s here and will be at Roland Garros.”

Vemic, 48, has an extensive coaching resume, having previously worked with the Bryan brothers, Andrea Petkovic, and Brandon Nakashima. He has also played alongside Djokovic in Davis Cup and ATP Tour events, offering a familiar and trusted presence as the Serbian star seeks to regain form.

Djokovic also confirmed that Boris Bosnjakovic, an analyst and assistant coach, will continue to share responsibilities with Vemic during the current swing of tournaments. “I feel good with them,” said Djokovic. “I’m not in a hurry to choose, or to know if I’ll have someone else by my side or not. I don’t know.”

The coaching change comes shortly after Djokovic parted ways with three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray on May 13 — less than six months into their high-profile collaboration. Murray, who officially retired from playing after the 2024 Olympics, joined Djokovic’s team late last year in a surprise move that captured global attention.

Despite their mutual respect and optimism, the partnership did not yield the success either man had hoped for. Djokovic has yet to win a title this season, falling in the Miami Open final to rising Czech star Jakub Mensik and suffering early exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid.

“He sees the game in an incredible way,” Djokovic said of Murray. “But… we did not achieve together what we hoped to achieve in terms of results. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. We tried.”

Djokovic, who turns 38 on Thursday, will begin his Geneva Open campaign on Wednesday against Hungarian veteran Marton Fucsovics. He is aiming for a milestone 100th ATP singles title as he builds momentum heading into Roland Garros, where he hopes to extend his men’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
