A few months ago, this seemed unlikely, but now it’s set to be one of the highlights at the Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic and his new coach Andy Murray have practised together in Melbourne for the first time ahead of the 2025 season opener, which starts on Sunday.
Djokovic, who is aiming for a record-breaking 11th Australian Open title and a historic 25th Grand Slam win, announced the unexpected decision to bring his long-time rival and close friend Murray onto his team in late November.
The pair, both 37 and born just a week apart, have a close bond, although Murray, who won three Grand Slam titles, ended his playing career after the Paris 2024 Olympics in August.
The two former rivals teamed up in the off-season after Djokovic, the Olympic champion, parted ways with his long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic.
This is Murray’s first coaching role since retiring, and a video on Tuesday showed the former world number one watching closely as Djokovic practised at Melbourne Park.
